From Braille smartwatches to GPS-enabled shoes, intuitive, connected technology is changing the game for people with disabilities.

According to a 2010 report from the U.S. Census, more than 56 million people, or nearly 20 percent of the nation’s population, are living with a physical or cognitive impairment of some kind.

The ability to connect to myriad streams of data, whether through a new piece of hardware or software and apps for devices, is playing heavily into how these products and applications are being developed, with the goal of helping people lead more independent, inclusive, and fulfilling lives.
